Data Access Webinar - Energy Consumption Data: What is it and why do we care?

July 8, 2025 | 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. ET | Open to state agency staff | Register now!

Utility customers' energy consumption data represent a valuable and critically important resource for operating, modernizing, and optimizing electric and gas systems. These data can also support a variety of important initiatives and outcomes, including customer energy efficiency investments, virtual power plants, and distribution grid planning, to name a few. At the same time, policies and practices around utility data access and sharing have evolved as IT capabilities grow and more jurisdictions adopt AMI. Numerous states and utilities have rolled out data-sharing programs of varying levels of sophistication and with varying degrees of success. The first part of this webinar will use state-specific examples to explain:

• Energy consumption data and associated use cases, particularly in the residential and small commercial sectors

• How utilities collect and manage customer energy consumption and billing data

• Evolution and status of data standards such as Green Button Connect, Electronic Data Interchange, Zigbee and IEEE2030.5

• Key industry and policy trends in customer data sharing, including data bills of rights and multi-utility data platforms

The second part of the webinar will serve as a live Technical Assistance session, during which participants will have the opportunity to ask questions specific to their energy consumption data circumstances and jurisdiction. Multiple experts will be available simultaneously in topic-specific breakout rooms to maximize the number of inquiries that can be answered.
