The risk of wildfires, once largely a concern primarily for the Western U.S., is an emerging national issue. The National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC), with support from the U.S. Department of Energy, are organizing a cohort to help states address emerging wildfire threats to critical energy infrastructure and navigate the evolving challenges this creates for State Energy Offices and Public Utility Commissions.
Building on NARUC's Wildfire Workbook and NASEO's Wildfire Forum Webinar Series, the cohort will feature expert presentations and action-oriented discussions among states to put the lessons learned into practice. The cohort includes four 90-minute topic-driven virtual sessions.
The third Wildfire Resilience Cohort session will be held on July 23, 2026, from 12:30–2:00 p.m. ET. This session will examine how State Energy Offices and Public Utility Commissions can support wildfire mitigation investments and planning across communities and utilities of all sizes, drawing on case studies featuring DOE Grid Resilience grants, FEMA hazard mitigation funding, state funding, and ratepayer-supported initiatives.
