The Americas: Guatemala

Amid efforts to advance renewable energy in the country, NARUC engaged in a partnership with Guatemala’s National Electric Power Commission (CNEE) with the support of the United States Agency for International Development. NARUC assisted CNEE in identifying the barriers that have hindered the development of geothermal renewable energy resources, and provide recommendations on how to overcome such barriers.

Utilizing an expert volunteer from the Oregon Public Utility Commission, NARUC recommended that the Guatemalan government should strengthen the ability of the public sector stakeholders to develop geothermal resources by promoting cooperation on the national level with academics and other agencies, organizing seminars, forums, and workshops related to geothermal development.

NARUC also worked with CNEE to organize a two-day national forum to promote renewable energy, and offered targeted training opportunities to CNEE staff on renewable energy issues.
