As utilities across the country seek to increase grid reliability and resilience in the context of decarbonization goals, there is growing interest in connected aggregations of distributed energy resources (DERs) – a.k.a. virtual power plants (VPPs) – to support integration of renewable energy and demand flexibility. Panelists will address common definitions of VPPs; current VPP technologies and examples; utility risks and benefits related to VPPs; and regulatory considerations, such as compensation and cost recovery.
