Ad Hoc Committee on National Wireless Consumer Protection Standards

Congress is expected to continue consideration of legislation establishing a scheme of oversight for the cellphone industry in 2009. NARUC has already specifically endorsed "mechanism" to be included in any such legislation. That mechanism, approved and described in a July 2009 Resolution assures State Commission input in to new national protection rules to address new consumer abuses.

The Ad Hoc Committee on National Wireless Consumer Protection Standards is charged with generating a basic initial set of national standards - that State commissions could enforce using existing mechanisms - to be offered to Congress early in 2009 for incorporation in any bill. Any standards developed by the Committee will require sanction by NARUC (via a resolution) before it could be established NARUC policy and offered for Congressional consideration.
