States Applaud Sens. Nelson, Udall for Pushing on Consumer Database

WASHINGTON—The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners issued the following statements thanking Sens. Bill Nelson of Florida and Tom Udall of New Mexico for encouraging the Federal Communications Commission to create an online consumer complaint database:

“On behalf of the nation’s State utility regulators, we commend Senators Nelson and Udall for addressing this important issue. The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners supports the development of a fully searchable database of consumer complaints regarding telecommunications service providers. Such a database will improve transparency and competition. A user-friendly, searchable database on the Federal Communications Commission Website that is capable of sorting consumer complaints would be a useful tool for consumers to use when choosing between competing service providers.”
--NARUC President Colette D. Honorable of Arkansas

“Creating an online, searchable database would empower consumers as they navigate the constantly evolving telecommunications landscape. This information will not only help customers but it would also provide needed data to the Federal Communications Commission and other State and federal agencies to detect systemic anti-competitive and/or anti-consumer behavior by service providers. I’d like to thank the Senators for their attention and leadership.”
--NARUC Committee on Consumer Affairs Chair Brandon Presley of Mississippi

“I am thankful for the Senators’ focus on this. For consumers, information is power. The more they know about their telecommunications service providers, the better off they will be. Moreover, an online publicly searchable database of consumer service complaints would also promote competition and allow service providers with fewer complaints to promote their services. This is an important initiative.”
--NARUC Committee on Telecommunications Chair Chris Nelson of South Dakota
