Telecom Chair Burke 'Encouraged' by FCC Proposal on Wireless Outage Reporting

WASHINGTON—National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners Committee on Telecommunications Chair John Burke of Vermont issued the following statement after the Federal Communications Commission set for comment a proposal requiring wireless companies to provide outage information during and after emergencies:

“Ensuring our communications infrastructure remains stable and reliable at all times, including during emergencies, is a national priority. The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners recently encouraged the FCC and State regulators to work together and with industry to develop policies that help ensure telecommunications networks remain functional during prolonged power outages. While we recognize natural disasters can cause extensive damage, we also believe communications providers must do all they can to shore up their networks so consumers have access to lifesaving services. NARUC does not have a specific policy endorsing this Federal Communications Commission action, but we are encouraged that they are taking this issue seriously. With more information available about outages, consumers can also make informed choices when shopping for wireless service.”
