NARUC Commends Senators for Addressing Waste Issue, Awaits Court Action on Yucca

WASHINGTON—The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners issued the following statement in response to the bipartisan draft legislation on nuclear-waste storage:

“We are still reviewing the draft and commend the Senators for bringing this issue to the forefront. At first blush the discussion draft appears to adopt a number of recommendations from the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future. We appreciated a number of the Commission’s conclusions and are encouraged that this legislation builds upon their hard work. Still, the Nuclear Waste Policy Act is the law of the land. We prefer that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission comply with existing law and resume its review of the Yucca Mountain application. We hope the courts will make sure this happens. But we are grateful the Senators are focusing on this lingering issue and we look forward to working with Sens. Wyden, Murkowski, Feinstein, and Alexander as this legislation moves forward.”
--NARUC President Philip Jones of Washington
