NARUC Congratulates Outgoing FCC Chair Genachowski

WASHINGTON—The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners issued the following statements after Federal Communications Commission Chair Julius Genachowski announced he is departing the agency:

“I thank and applaud Chairman Genachowski for his service at the Federal Communications Commission. He came to this position during one of the worst economic crises in our nation’s history, and he oversaw the development of numerous important initiatives. From the National Broadband Plan to much-needed reforms of the Lifeline access program, Chairman Genachowski left his mark on the telecommunications sector. Although we had our differences, the chairman understood and respected our concerns. I especially appreciate his willingness to reach out to us, particularly as both organizations analyze the future regulatory role of both the FCC and the States in the dynamic telecommunications industries. Our Task Force on Federalism and Telecommunications looks forward to continuing our work with the FCC’s Technology Transitions Policy Task Force so we can ensure consumers are the real winners as the marketplace evolves. I wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
--NARUC President Philip Jones of Washington

“On behalf of the NARUC Committee on Telecommunications, I congratulate Chairman Genachowski. He has served the FCC well in his tenure. I particularly appreciated his efforts to hold Voice-over-IP providers to the same outage standards as their more traditional counterparts. There were times when we disagreed, which should not surprise anyone as federal and State tensions are inherent in our federalist system of government. He surrounded himself with a great team and outstanding bureau chiefs, and accomplished a great deal in a challenging time in communications history.”
--NARUC Committee on Telecommunications Chair John Burke of Vermont
