Rockefeller's STB Bill Marks Significant Victory: NARUC
WASHINGTON—National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners President David Coen of Vermont issued the following statement after the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee approved S. 2889, The Surface Transportation Board Reauthorization Act of 2009:
“Passing this bill out of committee is a significant victory for the nation’s consumers. Unfair and uncompetitive freight-rail rates drive up the price of fuels shipped by rail, costs that are passed to consumers through their power bills. This legislation will help strengthen the Surface Transportation Board and bring more effective regulation to the freight-rail industry. We commend Committee Chairman Rockefeller for this accomplishment, and look forward to working with him and other lawmakers to see that this historic legislation is enacted in 2010.”
